How Pelvic Health Physical Therapy supports your journey

The muscles, tendons, and ligaments, that comprise the pelvic floor all serve an extremely important purpose, as they support the core of your body. Our pelvic floor therapists, Dr. Laura Kelly, Dr. Alexis English, and Dr. Christine Martirez can help relieve your pelvic pain, improve your flexibility, and increase your overall functionality.

The treatments involved in your pelvic floor rehabilitation plan will be tailored to the results of your initial assessment. During your physical examination, your condition or injury will be thoroughly evaluated, and a qualified physical therapist will develop a treatment plan to address your specific needs. This plan may include proactive and/or preventative treatments. For example, pelvic floor rehabilitation can help prepare individuals for significant life events, such as childbirth. Therapy typically includes a combination of exercises and soft tissue work designed to reduce symptoms with conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse or pelvic pain and improve your comfort.

At our Lake Como and East Brunswick physical therapy offices, we have the resources and expertise to treat all forms of pelvic pain. In many cases, our methods provide relief and recovery from issues that individuals have struggled with for years. If pelvic pain is limiting your life, contact Mana Physical Therapy today to begin your journey toward lasting relief!

Some common techniques used in Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation include:

  • Postural Exercises: These exercises are aimed at improving posture and stability in various positions as well as with functional activities.
  • Myofascial Exercises: These exercises will target the pelvic floor muscles and connecting fascia of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and lower extremities. This treatment may include light exercise, in addition to stretches and massage, in order to target restrictions and provide relief.
  • Diaphragmatic Breathing: Breathing exercises allow your diaphragm to expand and contract, which work directly with the pelvic floor and abdominal cavity.
  • Relaxation Techniques: Relaxation is a large part of physical therapy. It allows your muscles to ease tension, making it easier for them to be stretched and mobilized. Your physical therapist may suggest certain techniques, such as guided imagery or biofeedback, in order to help you relax.

transformative care in action

I have a pelvic floor issue and I’ve been doing therapy with Laura. She is very kind and professional. Therapy is one on one and no one else is in the office. Office is very clean and sanitary. I felt some relief after just 2 sessions! I have also used Laura in the East Brunswick office for neck, shoulder, and…

I met Dr. Laura during in a class my doula coordinated when I was still pregnant. I knew I’d feel comfortable with her, so I started seeing her for my post-partum care even though she’s over 30 minutes from me. She is wonderful and really knows her stuff!
