Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a screening tool used to evaluate seven fundamental movement patterns in individuals with no current pain complaint or musculoskeletal injury. The screen is designed to place an individual in extreme positions where movement deficits become noticeable if appropriate stability and mobility are not used.

Our FMS program screens athletes and active people who want to move better and prevent injury/pain.

Even though individuals are performing an activity or sport at a high level, it has been observed that many of these same individuals are actually limited in fundamental movement. This leads to the use of compensatory movements in order to achieve or maintain the level of performance needed for the activity. The inefficient use of compensation during movement lead to poor biomechanics that limit gains in performance and reduce the body’s ability to remain adaptable and durable against the risks of being involved in their activity or sport.

An appropriate time for this screen to be performed would be before or during training for a sport, or before starting a new exercise program. It is also appropriate if you feel like your body is just not moving as efficient as you’d like. After receiving results of the screen, your current exercise program may be modified or replaced with corrective exercises until a passing score is attained.

At Mana Physical Therapy, we can address the results of your FMS screen in 2 different ways.

  • We can consult with your trainer/coach on what exercises for you to avoid or replace, and what corrective exercises to include in training until you attain a passing score
  • You can attend corrective exercise sessions at Mana PT (Ex. 2x/week) with constant guidance and progressions until you attain a passing score.

Sessions will include one on one mobility, stability, and motor control exercises. They will be progressed at each session and new homework will also be given at each session.

If there is no pain present, this is considered a prevention and fitness enhancement program, which is not covered by insurance.

Initial assessment with corrective exercises: $150 (1 hour)
FMS score (21 is the maximal score)
This includes education of exercises to avoid/which are safe
Consultation with your trainer/coach
Initial list of home corrective exercises with guidance during this session

Follow up assessments: $75 (1/2 hour)
Progression and guidance of corrective exercises
Cleared to resume certain exercises (If attaining a passing score)
The frequency of follow-up sessions is ultimately up to the client’s availability. However, we recommend 1-3 sessions a week until a passing score is attained. This will allow for a faster return to unrestricted training in the client’s sport or activity.
